🎋 Shibari: An Introduction to Japanese Rope Bondage

Shibari (kinbaku) is the art of Japanese rope bondage — as much about connection as restraint. What it is, why people love it, and how to start safely.

Shibari (or kinbaku) is the Japanese art of rope bondage — beautiful, meditative, and as much about the connection between rigger and model as the restraint itself.

Beyond tying up

Shibari is a slow, intimate practice. The rope becomes a conversation — pressure, patience and trust. Many find the headspace as powerful as any sensation.

Start on the ground

Begin with simple floor ties (never suspension) using proper natural-fiber rope. Learn a few foundational ties before anything ambitious.

Rope safety

  • Keep safety shears within reach, always.
  • Avoid nerve points; watch for numbness, tingling or cold hands — release immediately.
  • Never around the neck, never left alone.
